Mogwai - Rock Action (2001)

I wasn't entirely impressed with Rock Action the first couple of listens. Then it started making sense. Being a concise thirty-eight minutes, it doesn't take as long to absorb, with the bulk that made Come On Die Young seem bloated eliminated; basically, it's four songs, some noisy interludes, and the extended piece "2 Rights Make 1 Wrong". All the while, it retains the sense of elegaic restraint that made the eponymous EP such a grower, particularly with "Burn Girl Prom Queen",. The fact that Rock Action actually has songs rather than guitar freakouts has put early fans of the Mogs' off. Dontcha (heart) Indie Kids? Sure, "Take Me Somewhere Nice" might seem a little less tumescent than "Like Herod", but it still had me scratching my head. But Gruff Rhys' singing on gives "Dial: Revenge" a sense of poise, even though I don't know what the hell he's saying; sounds good, takes the band somewhere new, that's what counts. But "2 Rights Make 1 Wrong" is every bit as good as "Mogwai Fear Satan", with the mood changing when the banjo kicks in, just when you think 'arrgh, this is getting dull'. Whilst the title may seem a tad cod-ironic, the album is as good a place as any to start regarding Mogwai and their peculiar variety of guitaristic ambience-and-crank.

Quiet! Loud! I'm one of the dorky fanboys that misses the Like Herod days. But, with the EP+2 and this new EP-ish album, they left that behind -- to mostly good effect.

This album is a great atmospheric guitar "rock" thing which goes well over dinner or loudly into some 'phones. All the singing is tasteful, catchy, and adds to the songs. Whew. I like it!
