As an whole, The Altogether has a lighter feel than Orbital's previous two albums, though the Hartnoll Bros trademarks are still in full effect, melodic and rhythmic inventiveness, a fascination with the odd gimmick, and lack of pretention regarding their influences, acknowledging their rave-party roots and their love of soundtracks without resorting to cliche. Some of the tracks are downright reminiscent of their two untitled albums, particularly the closer "Meltdown", the only long piece, whereas "Tootled" harks back in a way to "Satan", though without an amusing sample to kick it off, just lots of Tool's prog guitar. And their take on the Doctor Who theme is really quite good, letting it run through unfettered once before they go nuts with the breakbeats. Other highlights include the disassociated surf raveup "Tension" and the Ian Dury-inflected "Oi!". David Gray's voice sits oddly on the MOR-ish "Illuminate", but he makes a nice change from wailing divas and Thom Yorke, as far as vocals on dance tracks go. Parts of the album sound uninspired, particularly "Last Thing", but in general this is another worthy addition to the Orbital canon.
