New Buffalo is one Sally Russell from Sydney; and their debut five-track EP it's a lush affair, with layers of samples, analogue synths and beats, over which Russell's ethereal voice floats. The opening track, "16 beats", opens with sampled record crackle and distorted strings, and goes on from there, with a Yo La Tengo-esque electronic drum loop starting, under organs and synths. The next track is a lush orchestral arrangement, like something you'd expect from Björk or Goldfrapp, and yet oddly distorted, weith just a dose of dissonance (reminding me of Locust's "On The Horizon"). At one point, it almost veers off into Bacharachesque cocktail-lounge territory, though only for a second. Then are three more tracks, with everything from interestingly mixed piano-based ballads to crunchy beats and analogue fuzz erupting into lush layered choruses. This is gorgeous stuff.

love love love this artist. i cannot reccommend it more highly for anyone who's a fan of great songs.
