We've reviewed some of these through the year. Check the archives!
Caveat: I'll probably change my mind about half of this in a week.
Great New Albums:
Paul Kelly ... Nothing But A Dream
Fourplay String Quartet Digital Manipulation
Gerling When Terrorists Chase The Sun
Stereolab Sound-Dust
Super Furry Animals Rings Around The World
Good New Albums:
Radiohead Amnesiac (and the recent live album as well)
Macy Gray The Id
Godspeed You Black Emperor Raise Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven (and also the ASMZetc. newie is great as well)
Pulp We Love Life
You Am I Dress Me Slowly
Disappointing New Albums:
- R.E.M. Reveal - It was OK, but they need the discipline that Bill used to bring. Still worth getting
- The Orb Cydonia - Orblivion had S.A.L.T. to rescue it, this doesn't have anything like that.
- Daft Punk Discovery - Way overhyped by sections of the press, perhaps because it reminded certain sad Gen-Xers of "The Breakfast Club".
- Aphex Twin Drukqs - Has its moments of genius. Has a fair amount of drekq as well. Still worth getting if you like his stuff.
- Sounds Like Sunset whatever it was called - Dumping half of the Big Lebowski script into the comments still doesn't change my mind, kiddies. It still sucks.
Five Great Tracks, singles or otherwise:
- Mogwai "My Father My King" (their album Rock Action was good, as well.)
- Super Ferry Animals "No Sympathy"
- Macy Gray "Sexual Revolution"
- Coda "Born, Never Asked"
- Tortoise "Seneca" (pity the rest of Standards was a bit dull in comparison to TNT)
Five Older Records (ie 2000 and before) that I bought and really dug:
- Faust, Faust IV (1973)
- Mike Oldfield, Incantations (73 minute version) (1978) - I had this before but i've had a road to Damascus conversion over it. The review of this here earlier this year explains why.
- Sigur Ros, Agaetis Byjurn (1999)
- Gersey Hope Springs (2000)
- Tom Waits The Black Rider (1993)
Five other albums I'd better mention because they're good as well.
- Regurgitator Ed And Rod - dumb but addictive.
- Orbital The Altogether - Not quite as involved as their last couple, still appeals.
- Machine Gun Fellatio Bring It On! - Really, the local sleeper album of 2001. Not just Australia's answer to the Butthole Surfers, they've got ballads! Oo-er.
- Air 10000Hz Legend - Weird but wonderful.
- Autechre Confield - Tracks two and three, whatever they're called, are pretty damned good in a an abstract bouncy kind of way.

_Born, Never Asked_ - is that a cover of the old Laurie Anderson track ? Spritualized covered it once upon a time, too...
Yep. The rest of the album's pretty good as well, but that really stands out.
