Gersey - Hope Springs (2000)

I got a copy of this via curious means, picking one up labeled "promotion use only" absurdly cheap at a massive second-hand goods place set up in some old tobacco sheds between Bright and Porepunkah whilst on a day trip. I discovered a label rep business card with a note inside saying "I hope you enjoy this", but it would seem that the recipients of didn't, whether they listened to it or not is mystery. Either way, those people were fools for passing it on.

Because Hope Springs is pretty damned good. It doesn't knock you in between the eyes, rather keeping things subtle but strong without sounding half-baked like Sounds Like Sunset, or overwrought like certain Montreal bands. Gersey certainly have nailed the knack of using the typical rock configuration augmented by strings and trumpet to lay down the textures, whilst keeping in touch with the indie-pop aesthetic. The longest songs, "So Long Silver" and "The Beautiful Look City Today" are the best on the album, since they are given the time to stretch out. It's very much sip your beer while you nod along stuff, and definitely worth investigation if you like that sort of thing.
