A Charter Of Sorts

The original idea for this site was to pick records and write about them. Somehow the focus has managed to spread beyond that, to examine the whole thing about music, though the core idea here remains with that goofy artifact of modern music reproduction technology, the record. Music is one of those things that invokes great passion in some, and leaves others cold. Buggered if I can figure it all out, and yet trying to figure it adds to the intrigue, the fun, the inscrutibility of music. As I said in the original charter: "Some of us are trying to be Simon Reynolds. Some of us are trying to be Lester Bangs. Some of us are trying to be ourselves." And perhaps, more than anything, this site is about defining the indefinite, exactly how does music brings us joy, or anger, or befuddlement.

Contributor Applications

It's not bloody open slather here, you know. You can't just send us any old bunch of hype and expect us to use it because we're desperate for material. We're not desperate for material.

On the other hand, if you can enjoy writing about music, do it in a reasonably coherent and readable manner, and are completely at home with the fact that you will get bugger-all recognition for doing this, and won't be pissed off by my editing your work because I won't have to piss you off by editing your work, you may, may, get posting privileges. Being Australian helps.

In other words, If you know me in some way, and you want in, drop a few hints. If you don't know me, good luck trying. It's a cabal, not a clique.

Comments

It'd be nice to say that comments won't get deleted, but alas, some people can only respond with nonsensical abuse that the reviewers and readers shouldn't have to put up with. On the other hand, the stupidity of Kid Rock fans is something the whole world should see.

Exclusivity

I don't care much about exclusivity, that is, I don't have any problems if you have the review up somewhere else, but bear in mind that the other site or publication may indeed have such a policy, so check before anyone gets hurt. If you want an article withdrawn from here, then that's fine.

Submitting Material For Review (i.e. Contra)

If, for some insane reason someone thinks that they could use the publicity from this place, every record or demo that gets sent to one of the regular reviewers has a very good chance of getting a review. Hey. We get some free music, you get some buzz on a low-traffic website. Submitting something doesn't necessarily mean a decent review. I should add that the vast majority of records that get reviewed here is stuff we've bought, so we're not too concered that pissing off a label is going to jeopardise our gravy train ticket.

As is the case with most publications and sites of this nature, if you feel like sending something in, it's probably a good idea to check out a few of the reviews, to figure which reviewer is least likely to pan your record, and get in contact with them individually for postage details. Most of us are in Australia, there's one or two in the UK as well.

We prefer compact discs (pressed or burnt) only. Plus, they won't be returned (unless it's spectacularly bad and the reviewer wants the damned thing out of their house). Also, we won't review demo mp3s if you're lame and just send us a website where we have to download stuff from. We're not all on broadband connections, you know. Sending us something in atom format shows that you care. Did I mention we don't return demo copies?

The Colophon Bit

Records Ad Nauseam is part of the Grudnuk Creations empire, as you may have guessed.

This site is maintained with the doovy Movable Type CMS, and much of the design and template configuration is handcoded with Textpad.

I'm not sure I want to be telling you this, but the font used in the title is Melbylon, which is available from the font section of the empire.

That Is All
